Family is not something you should take for granted. You should treat them with more respect than you would an acquaintance. I understand life happens and you get into arguments with family, but you should never resort to the standby of, “but we’re family. We are supposed to fight.” Family is not an excuse to use harsh words and hurt each other. Family is supposed to be your safe space. Dan and I are no stranger to the realization that every family does not have this. Unfortunately, we only have one side to call safe and yet not unfortunately. Blood makes you relatives but loyalty makes you family. We have come to make new family relationships. These relationships have come to sustain us and keep us uplifted. We are the parents, couple and business partners we are today because of our families.
While this may not seem like a wedding topic, it really is. Weddings are the blending of families. Weddings are the beginnings of new family dynamics. We do not take this job lightly. We are beyond honored when people choose us to right the ship of their big day. Last month we did a wedding for a couple who’s ceremony brought me to tears (to be fair I cry at every wedding) but this one struck a cord in me so deep. The rabbi asked guests who were related to the couple to stand. He asked the family to support the couple. He asked them be their safe place when they need it. And then he asked the guests who were not related but friends to also stand. He then told them the same. Everyone there was responsible for loving them, supporting their decisions and being their encouragers. My eyes filled with tears are people stood and smiled in agreement. This is so integral to a healthy marriage. A foundation is key, a support system is a must and trust in one another is an absolute. Never underestimate the value of the circle you create around your marriage and family.
So, find your anchor and hang on. The cliché phrase - Life is a rollercoaster - can be over used and yet so true. Find the one who's hand you want to hold for all the ups and downs. Find the friends that become family because of their loyalty. Give credence to those family members that build you up and not tear you down.
